Dr. Smith grew up in eastern Ohio . She attended college at The Ohio State University in Columbus , OH . After completing her Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition degree, she continued her education at Nova Southeastern College of Optometry. While studying at Nova, Dr. Smith got involved with optometry and the college on many different levels. She help various leadership positions, became involved with the local legislature, and participated in many numerous community service activities. Her love to help people drove her to organize and successfully complete 3 medical missions to 3 rd world countries: Nicaragua in 2004, Ecuador in 2005, and Peru in 2006 to give over 1000 eye exams and glasses to the needy per mission trip.

  Her external rotation sites included a large private practice in Jacksonville , Florida and Veteran's Hospital in Salisbury , NC . Both of these sites specialized in disease management with emphasis on glaucoma and retinal care such as diabetic retinopathy. Recently, Dr. Smith was honored in Vision Monday magazine. She was featured in the article “The Next Generation of Optometry Leadership.”

Dr. Smith is a member of the South Carolina Optometric Association, Coastal Carolina Optometric Society, American Optometric Association (sports vision, low vision, and contact lens sections.) She is an Associate member of College of Optometrists in Vision Development.

 Dr. Smith has also become very involved with several community organizations. She is a member of the Charleston Junior League, devoting much of her time to local community service projects. Dr. Smith recently became the South Carolina Clinical Director of Special Olympics Opening Eyes vision screening program. She is a Brownie Girl Scout Leader and is a committee member for Gold Award recipients for the entire Eastern South Carolina Girl Scout council. Many of her evenings and weekend days are spent with her wonderful “little sister” from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

Moving to Charleston has been a childhood dream of Dr. Smith's. Her grandparents resided in Summerville , SC and most of her summers were spent in the local areas visiting with them. When not involved in professional duties, Dr. Smith loves to spend time with family and friends. She adores her dog, Bailey, who gets many trips to the Dog Park and beach. Dr. Smith also enjoys outdoor activities, scrapbooking and sports, especially Ohio State Football.
